Private Tours of Traditional Japan

KOTO TOURS... TRAVELLING IN JAPAN 30 YEARS

During the eight years we lived in Japan (in Nara, Kyoto, Kanagawa, and Gifu Prefectures) the focus of our interests was on the traditional ... the  ancient way of crafting, farming, and thinking that has continued from centuries ago down through the present day. We sought out the old paths and shrine sites, walking from village to village on forest trails, asking the elders for stories of long ago, planting rice barefoot and by hand in late spring, sitting at a farmer’s hearth sharing the warmth, bustle and foibles of the family...
Our focus as we travel with you continues to be on the most unchanged aspects of the culture--fine arts and crafts being made as they have for hundreds of years, shrines and ancient places that retain their integrity and beauty, villages where daily life on the mountainsides or on the sea relies upon the balance between people and nature, and where seasonal festivals and celebrations are held in the old way, the people proud of their heritage and glad to share their part of it with travelers from afar.
Our tours are unique--planned for your maximum enjoyment, with details of travel and finances taken care of, so that each moment is experienced to the fullest. The exclusive size of our 8-person group enables us to stop on a dime for...serendipity...a wedding procession in a farm village, the master brewer tasting the first sake from the barrel, a beam-raising for a new farmhouse, skeins of silk thread drying in front of a dyer’s workshop...
...In our travels we are able to spend hours of lively discussion and discovery with the abbot in a Zen temple or with a potter throwing on a kick wheel, a basket maker weaving bamboo...each journey we make is different from any other, both in the path taken and the experience.
Our tours are fun- well-planned, and yet full of spontaneity!

We look forward to travelling with you!
